Dressing for Your Body Shape?

Updated: May 30, 2023

Finding the Right Fit to Add That Snatched Look to Your Figure!

Have you ever gone shopping, found the cutest pair of pants and tried them on, then looked in the mirror & instantly gained 10 pounds and lost 2 inches?

Crazy, but we all have been in this situation a time or two—I can attest to it! The pants cut wasn't made for your body shape or type. And knowing your correct body shape will make it easier and more enjoyable to shop, and you'll look amazing in all your clothes. Having the right pieces in the right style and fit is what makes a wardrobe work successfully.

So, What is your body shape?

There are many categories of body shapes out there, yet we'll concentrate on the four most widely-known body shapes:

  • Pear

  • Apple

  • Rectangle

  • Hourglass

All of these body shapes have their own telltale characteristics, which will help you identify your correct form and body shape, as well as how to find the right fit for your body type..

The Pear Body Shape

The Pear body shape is the most common among women and is characterized by carrying your weight in your lower half. So if you are bottom-heavy and have larger hips and thighs, you are a pear. Having a pear-shaped figure, you want to wear bright-colored tops or tops with lots of interest to draw attention away from your hips and move the eye up. Find an interesting collar or sleeve treatment. Try fitted jackets that end at your waistline and accentuate your waist.

You're trying to balance out the weight of your hips and thighs with your smaller top half, so try to avoid tight-fitting pencil skirts or low-rise jeans or bold colors that call attention to the area. Stay away from jackets that end at your hip line as they will make you look thick and boxy.

The Apple Body Shape

The Apple shape tends to carry weight around the middle or mid-section. They do not have a well-defined waist and typically have thinner legs and arms. As an apple-shaped figure, you should avoid anything that adds volume to your mid-section, for example, pleated skirts or short boxy jackets.

You should wear longer length tops; the empire style is especially flattering on an apple silhouette. Try and find tops and blouses with some type of design element or pattern along the neckline to help draw the eye upwards.

Rectangle Body Shape

The Rectangle body shape is fairly straight up and down, with not much of a waist and not very curvy. They can also have a smaller bust. With a rectangle body shape, you want to wear clothing that gives you a more curvy appearance. You can achieve this by wearing clothing with more structure at the shoulders and can be cinched in at the waist with a belt. Avoid low-rise jeans or pants because they can make you look too long in the waist.

Hourglass Body Shape

The Hourglass body shape is very curvy, with a full bust and hips and a tiny waist, giving her that hourglass shape. Hourglass figured women want to avoid wearing baggy clothing that will hide and not accentuate your slim waist. Try wearing a simple wrap or sheath dress to show off your undeniable curves.

Whatever #bodyshape you have, you always want to look your best in the clothing you are wearing. Sometimes, you may need to enlist the help of a body shaper, also known as shape wear, which is the best friend of all women. Body shapers come in many different styles and perform a multitude of functions to flatter and enhance one's figure..
